Relay For Life 18 – 19 September 2010
Relay for Life involves teams of 10 to 15 people taking turns to walk around the showground track for 19 hours to raise funds for Cancer Council. It involves the whole community and is not promoted as a sporting or endurance event. A village-festival atmosphere is created with tents pitched, entertainment and activities provided and awareness raised of cancer issues. Highlights of Relay for Life are:
The Survivors Walk, which is the opening lap of Relay for Life, proudly led by cancer survivors and carers wearing purple sashes. This sets the tone for the entire event.
An emotional Candlelight Ceremony is held after sunset, allowing friends and families to gather in remembrance of loved ones lost to cancer and support those fighting cancer.
Music, entertainment, games and food are provided to maintain high morale among participants and encourage spectators to stay and support Relay for Life.
Participants are encouraged to erect tents on the track infield for a place to rest and sleep during Relay for Life. This further adds to the village atmosphere.
The Kempsey Relay for Life 2009 raised an amazing $50,890. The helps to defeat cancer by enabling cancer research ($14.7 million in 2009), cancer support services (such as the Cancer Helpline and one-to-one support program) and cancer information (booklets in the local libraries) to be funded.
